Morten Morland specialises in grotesque caricature. In this cartoon, working people who object to illegal migration are not portrayed as citizens with legitimate concerns. They are transformed into an ugly, black-clad horde - menacing, stupid and barely human. 

How revealing. The people who work, pay taxes, obey the law, raise families and keep Britain functioning are apparently the real threat. Not the criminal smuggling gangs. Not the government machinery that receives and processes the arrivals. Not the politicians who repeatedly promised to stop the boats - but seem determined to keep them coming. No the villains are ordinary British people who have finally said: 

“Enough.” 

This is what became of socialism. It abandoned its traditional supporters, moved into the metropolitan drawing room, opened the champagne - and began caricaturing the working class from a safe distance. 

Then it asks: 

“Why do they think we despise them?” 

Because every sneering line gives the game away.
