# BEFORE CREATING THE NEXT INSTITUTIONAL HERO

Perhaps every university planning to manufacture an inspirational public icon should be required to produce two signed disclaimers.  
  
Because constructing an institutional hero is rather like constructing wings with feathers supplied by a chosen hero's personal history, claimed achievements and academic credentials.....it carries substantial risk....  
  
A university which insists on using the wax of DEI, Virtue signalling, publicity and moral self-congratulation to glue it all together is inviting catastrophe........  
  
The first disclaimer signed by a chosen icon:  
  
"I understand that the university intends to present me as an historic appointment, inspirational figure and proof of its moral progress.  
  
I understand that greater publicity will bring greater scrutiny of my qualifications, publications and public claims.  
  
I understand that institutional celebration does not make the wings stronger, and that criticism is not automatically harassment.  
  
I understand that the higher the university encourages me to fly, the more catastrophic any failure of verification may become."  
  
The second - and far more important - should be signed by the university leadership:  
  
"We certify that every feather has been examined and every material claim independently verified.  
  
We accept responsibility for attaching this individual to our institutional narrative.  
  
We have assessed whether the person is prepared for the altitude, publicity and foreseeable scrutiny we are creating.  
  
We will not mistake favourable media warmth for proof that the wings are sound.  
  
We will not collect the prestige during the ascent, then blame the sun for problems occurring in flight.  
  
We will not abandon the person carrying the wings when the feathers start coming loose."  
  
This would not excuse racial abuse, threats, defamation or cruelty. Those remain indefensible.  
  
Neither would it restrict legitimate journalism. Public scrutiny merely reveals whether the wings were properly constructed.  
  
Universities cannot build reputations with soft institutional wax and then demand that the sunlight be regulated.  
  
It is dangerously convenient:  
  
The individual supplies the feathers.  
The publicity department supplies the halo.  
The university use the wax of Ideology and DEI.  
The public supplies the applause.  
The press supplies the sunlight.  
  
And when the wax melts:  
  
The institution puts the sun on trial.  
  
Before creating another institutional hero, They must explain the risks, prepare the individual for scrutiny and require everyone constructing the wings to sign their name. Universities must examine every feather, verify every claim and fasten the wings with that which is capable of surviving the heat of public scrutiny: truth, evidence, due diligence and sound scholarship - not ideological wax.
